Instant Restaurants

This term, Room 5 children have organised five instant restaurants in the hall as part of our "My Kitchen Rules" competition. Following a survey of the school to identify the types of meals that would be the most popular and studying a price list of the potential ingredients, the children worked in groups to choose a dish that they thought would be both tasty and profitable. The dishes chosen were: Baked Potatoes, Macaroni Cheese, Pumpkin Soup, Pasta/Sauce, and Stuffed Potatoes. Each group then took a turn to decorate the hall and turn it into an instant restaurant. As part of this project, they had to undertake research on the health benefits of the ingredients in their dish and pass this information on to their guests by way of some sort of presentation.

All groups did an amazing job of their restaurants and sent their customers away happy. The concept of enterprise was an important part of this inquiry and the purpose of the exercise was to make money. A total of $380 was raised from the five restaurants and the winning group gets to decide how to spend the profits.

This project would not have been possible without the help of a team of parents who ensured that each restaurant ran smoothly and delivered delicious food. We are very grateful for your support.

MP3's Visit to the Recording Studio

On Tuesday 20 August, members of the school band, MP3, visited the University of Otago's Albany St recording studio to record a CD of four original songs. This was an excellent opportunity for the children to see the recording process in action and to experience the difference in the quality of the sound that can be produced when using their state of the art equipment - the mixing desk alone is worth a million dollars! The children performed extremely well and can be very proud of the finished product. Top of the Pops here we come!!

Art Gallery Visit

On Wednesday 6 August we visited the Early Settlers Museum and the Art Gallery. At both venues our work centred around our current focus on "Food". The museum educator discussed different types of food and food preparation methods used across the ages. At the Art Gallery the children worked hard to produce 3-D fruit bowls, some of which are now featured on the art gallery's website. Here are some photos of our the children at work at the art gallery.

Milton Area Cross Country

Last Thursday we had the combined schools cross country event at Tokoiti. It was a glorious sunny day but quite muddy underfoot. Our students performed extremely well and we ended up with a large number of them qualifying for the South Otago cross country in mid-August. Congratulations to all the children for a superb effort in this event. Here are some photos of Room 5 children participating in their races.
